Just like all the "big" holidays, Easter started off good and has now been turned into a huge production.
As a kid, I loved Easter. Why? Before I was taught about the resurrection of Christ, and everything leading up to it, Easter was about candy, eggs, and gifts. Yes, I was kid who got awesome gifts on Easter as if it were a second Christmas.
Now, as an adult with my own children, I'm conflicted. I want my children to have that excitement of hunting eggs and the wonderment of the Easter Bunny. The innocence and imagination is something that I don't want lost on my boys. I don't, however, want to go overboard with them. I want them to learn why we (as a family) celebrate it and I want them to them to know this isn't another Christmas or birthday. I don't want them spoiled. I want them to learn that family and simplicity are awesome just as it is.
I will take my kids to egg hunts and the Easter Bunny will visit our home, but they will not be getting a new bike this holiday or a bunch of new clothes and candy. We'll talk about why Easter is important as a family and spend some quality time making memories. I can only pray that's enough. Lord knows, I don't want my kids sitting in therapy some day in the future blaming us on not exploiting the holidays... Unfortunately, we all know that this spoiled and entitled generation that is being raised will have plenty of these sessions. I'm trying my best to prevent that in my kids.
